WSIL: What was known as the ‘final gathering place’ of Mulkeytown, Ill., has closed. The Mulkeytown Post Office has officially closed its doors.
The building was leased to the St. Louis United States Postal Service Distribution Center, but the landlords wanted to do something else with the building, so they did not renew the lease. The Communication Coordinator for the Distribution Center, Mike Cooke, said the close was sudden.
Larry Reaney has lived in the area for more than 60 years. He’s disappointed in the loss.
“To me, it doesn’t make a whole lot of a difference what they’re going to do with it,” Reaney said. “’cause I wanted to see the post office stay, you know?”
Off-camera, several residents living around the post office say they’re shocked, and hate to see it go. Reaney called it the last gathering place of Mulkeytown.
“It’s going to be missed big time because this is the only thing we had left it town … was the post office. The school closed down here several years back,” Reaney said. “All the old men in town here would gather down here and wait for them to put the mail up,” he said. Read more.
