Downtown Alexandria, Louisiana, will soon be left without a post office.
The Alexandria Downtown Post Office will cease operations on May 31. The branch is located at 515 Murray Street, inside the federal courthouse.
According to a spokesperson from the U.S. Postal Service’s communications team, there will not be a new branch opening to take over services offered at the downtown location. Instead, customers will be diverted to the main office, located at 1715 Odom Street in Alexandria.
The lease on the Downtown Post Office expired and USPS was “unable to solidify a new agreement” with the General Services Administration, a spokesperson said. GSA is a government agency that manages office space for federal employees.
(Closing this post office without a relocation to a new facility would require a discontinuance procedure, but there are no reports that such a process has been conducted.—Ed.)
