Pandemic forces Postal Service to suspend dozens of post offices

According to its Service Alerts page, as of April 8, “The Postal Service has so far experienced only minor operational impacts in the United States as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

There have been some disruptions, however, including temporary post office closings.  The Postal Service is providing a page on its website that contains a state-by-state list of residential service disruptions.  These disruptions include those post offices that have been temporarily suspended due to the pandemic.

The list shows that about 57 post offices are now under suspension as a result of the pandemic, as well as a few others due to the usual causes for suspension, like structural problems with the building.

Among the suspensions is the historic Challenger Post Office in 21801 Sherman Way in Canoga Park, CA (photo above).

The California Department of Food and Agriculture reports that there has been a resurgence of Virulent Newcastle Disease in Southern California. The below quarantine remains in effect. There is no end date.

Due to the Virulent Newcastle Disease (VND) Regional Quarantine in the state of California the United States Postal Service is updating our alert to no longer allow shipments of birds (all),
hatching or embryonated eggs into or out of zip codes 90000-93599.

VND, formerly known as Exotic Newcastle Disease, is a serious, highly contagious viral disease that can affect poultry and other birds. It is important that all commercial and non-commercial poultry owners maintain effective barriers to mitigate the risk of VND. VND is a nearly-always fatal respiratory infection in poultry for which there is no cure.

The Postal Service ban includes the State of California quarantine area and includes other Postal areas that could potentially transport birds, hatching or embryonated eggs.

This quarantine is effective immediately across the following affected Districts.

  • San Diego
  • Los Angeles
  • Santa Ana
  • Sierra Coastal

Barber NPU, 95926-4038 — This nonpersonnel unit located at 554 Vallombrosa Ave. is closed due to a fire. All PO Box mail has been relocated to the Chico Main Post Office, 550 Vallombrosa Ave., 95926-9998. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Due to damage to the Barber NPU, there are no plans to reopen the facility.
